It happened. The first video game artbook - "The World of the game Death Stranding" - has reached gamers. The publishing house Mal'opus snatched the palm in this race, with which it is definitely worth congratulating, because a lot of effort was clearly invested in the implementation of this project.
The edition came out incredibly cool. When I picked it up at the post office, I was seriously surprised, because I thought it would be somewhere 30% less. Our publishers of hand-drawn stories have not yet produced anything similar in size. "The World of the Death Stranding game" is a huge book of 27x29 cm format. It's almost like a PlayStation 4, and about twice as large in area as a large-format edition of Native Speech. This is one of those books that you have to sit down at the table to read, because you can't hold it in your hands. And it gives a very cool feeling. For a moment, I even remembered how as a child I read a hefty edition of The Lord of the Rings from the Astrolabe and could not hold it.
For the first time, I unfolded it with great skepticism. The game came out controversial and although the visual design was her strong point, she still had the feeling that the book would not meet expectations. And it turned out differently. I am one of those who are interested in artbooks precisely as an opportunity to look at how everything was created. Trace the path from hastily sketched concept art to ready-made models. And "The World of the game Death Stranding" is about this. There is a minimum of text, relatively few detached images of the general plan with beautiful landscapes and the maximum of ideas. Flipping through page after page, the hands wanted to take a pencil and draw or describe something on their own right from here. In these chains, with the help of tiny text prompts, it is easy to follow the thoughts of artists and be filled with love for these images
In such things, the quality of the publication is very important. And here Mal'opus gave heat. Cool format, good paper, selective varnishing of the cover, a very good choice of translators. Let the text in the "World of the Death Stranding game" is not enough, but it warms my heart that the publication has fallen into the caring hands of SBT Localization. This team not only knows what they are doing, but is also permeated through and through with a love of video games and everything related - and this is very important in working on a video game artbook. I was somewhat upset either by the unwillingness or the prohibition to adapt the names of the characters, as a result of which those unfamiliar with English lose such straightforward attempts of genius in depth as naming a character by Hartman.
Those who expected from the "World of the Death Stranding game" a new level of deepening into the history of the world or the plot will have to be upset. This publication does not set itself such a goal and you will not find it here. Which, perhaps, is for the best, because concentrating on the task of conveying exactly the history of the creation of the overall design of the project - the book copes with it perfectly.
